Chapter 10
Nikki clenched her teeth and gripped the steering wheel of the car just a little too tightly as she backed out of the driveway. She did not want to think about the massage, but it drew her thoughts like a car accident drawing the gaze of passersby.
I just need to find a man, she thought to herself, but the idea of a man in bed with her did not make her feel any better. She cast back to her past relationships, none of which had been particularly satisfying. She always seemed to end up dating some jock from a dojo or gym, some guy she ended up having a “go out for a few drinks and talk war stories” relationship with. Guys who were fun to watch a game with or practice new martial arts moves on. But not guys who stirred her to the core. Not guys in whom she could confide her insecurities. And not guys she wanted to lean forward and…the image of Alex’s body, full breasts seeming so touchable, flashed in front of her.
She thrust the distracting thought away as she shifted gear into first and pulled out of the driveway, back onto the sedate street. Now that she thought about it, all her truly close relationships had been with women, or girls, back in school, like her first best friend, Taylor. Taylor had been the most beautiful girl in school--gorgeous brown-gold hair, eyes that shimmered, cheeks that glowed so rosy after playing a hard game of softball at recess. And in sixth grade, when Taylor told her she “liked” David, Nikki had never been able to actually believe it. For years, she had believed her friend had been saying how much she like the boy just because it was in style to act so grown-up. In retrospect, of course, Taylor probably had liked him. He was a year ahead of them in school, the pitcher on the junior high baseball team and head of the wrestling team, the tallest boy in his seventh grade class, a dashing lad with easy good looks. It had just been too hard to believe that girls really liked boys.
Then, Taylor and her family moved from Louisiana to Ohio at the beginning of seventh grade. Nikki had known her heart was shattered beyond repair. She had moped and grieved for what felt like forever, and even now, over a decade and a half later she could still remember the pain. They had called each other several times over the months following the move, and had even exchanged a couple of letters, but eventually, Taylor had found a new best friend, and the calls had stopped.
Having Taylor as a best friend had made her wonder about the whole “boy-girl” thing, but it was the experience of Sherri Foster and Kim Richards that had cinched things for Nikki, making her realize that she could never allow a girl to be…too close. Four years older than Nikki, Sherri had been her next-door neighbor while growing up, and Nikki always thought Sherri was the coolest thing since freezer-pops.
